The Fate of Love |
Part 2
Close the Entrance to the Estates-General? asked Oscar, unable to believe what she heard.
General Bouille affirmed:
Close all the doors immediately! This is an order from the King.
But the delegates wont be able to get inside! Oscar still couldnt see the point of this stupid command.
Thats right. The Estates-General must be suspended.
Thats odd, continued Oscar revealing her mind, The convening and the dissolution of the Estates-General are decided by the Estates-General itself. Even if its an order from the King
General hit his swords tip to the ground. The frown on his face got deepened:
Thats why I told you to seal it! His majesty did not say it must dissolve. I have given you a direct order, Brigadier Jarjayes. Seal it off as firmly as possible!
I dont mean to argue, attempted Oscar once again, But the delegates are the legitimate elected representatives of the French people. Doing such a thing is nothing but an insult to them.
Without his Majesty, neither the People, the delegates, nor us nobles will be able to exist! roared General, Isnt it so, Brigadier?
Oscar hesitated one moment, then as she had begun with: But your Excellency, he stopped her with a hand gesture: Stop it, Oscar! I didnt summon you to argue, but to give an order to you! Remember; this is his Majestys will!
Oscar couldnt argue anymore She saluted her superordinate and took her leave, as Andr and Alain standing behind her followed. When they got out of the palatial building of military headquarters, she leaned her hand onto a column and stopped, exhausted She knew the reason of this sudden order, it was because the Estates-General had claimed itself to be the true representative of the French people. This was an unallowable insult to their sovereignty in the eyes of the nobles forming the cabinet. Oscar didnt know what to do
What should I do, Andr, Alain? she asked, hopeless
Alain wanted to console her:
Dont worry Commander! Weve been given an order, there is nothing we can do! But the more dirty tricks they use, the more passionate, we, the commoners will become!
And the next day, there stood a huge padlock at the gate of the hall where Estates-General convened. The Delegates, in a big surprise, were staring at the soldiers who were guarding the Hall one day ago: Their rifles were directed towards themselves now!
Finally Robespierre stepped forward:
Let me talk to the person in charge!
Oscar came out of where she was standing. Robespierre tried to persuade her, but she did not say a word. There was nothing she could do Thus, the delegates decided to go to the Jeu de Pomme, where the famous Tennis Court Oath was declared. This was the event that marked the start of French Revolution
Inside the grand room of his in the main headquarters, General Bouille was scolding Oscar:
You and your French Guards are dismissed from your current special guarding assignment! I consider opening the front door of the assembly hall as defying my orders!
After the tennis court oath was declared, the King had seen the growing support behind Estates-General and had summoned the three Estates to assemble again, to solve the chaotic situation. However, there was again a dirty trick: The Colonel who was sent to supervise the entrance of the delegates to the assembly hall, had only called the names of representatives from first and second estates. The delegates of third estate were forced to stand under the heavy rain until all the others were getting inside one by one!
Finally, Oscar, who was watching the scene so far, couldnt stand this absurdity any more and had ordered her own men to open up all the front doors and let the delegates inside. But this had caused even more trouble: The nobles in close vicinity of the King had persuaded him that the third estate delegates were rebels. He came to dissolve the Estates-General but what? Nobody obeyed his orders anymore! They refused neither to dissolve nor to leave!
Thus, Oscar was immediately summoned by General Bouille, as the person responsible for this to happen. Now, she could feel the cold gaze of General on her face as he began to speak:
You could have been arrested and court-martialed, but Im forgiving you and just dismissing you from your duty, since your father is an old friend of mine!
Oscars eyes were as cold as ice:
Id like to leave if thats all you have to tell me, my men are waiting for me.
No, now you have a new order, listen carefully: The French guards company B will fully equip itself, and immediately head back to the assembly hall, and remove all the members of the national assembly faction!
Oscars eyes were wide-opened, what the heck?!
General went on:
Use force on those who resist, no matter what they say! If necessary, you may fire on them and kill them!
Oscar looked at him in a great astonishment:
Fire kill them" -then, she went mad at this howling injustice, she started yelling, her fists clenched- "How can you, Excellency?? They are the representatives chosen by the People of France! You are ordering me to point guns at them?!
They are no longer the civil representatives! They are mere rebels who defy His Majesty! So, equip your men right away and head to the assembly hall!
I will not! defied Oscar bravely.
The General was serious as a stone:
Then you leave me no choice: I will have to arrest you for a treason!
At the same time all the rifles in the room were pointed towards Oscar. The General walked to the door:
Then Ill give my order directly to your men, he said, and ordered his men: Dont let her step out from this room until I allow it!
After he left the room, Oscar moved to the side of the window, to see what was going on outside. She watched the scene where Alain and eleven others defied the command of the General with a great pride; but she felt rather a huge agony when she saw them arrested by the men of the General. They would probably be trialed for treason! To prove her fears, General Bouille came back to the room she was held in, and told her:
Your men are as stubborn as you, Brigadier! Ill demand before a military court that all 12 be shot to death!
Oscar couldnt believe in her ears:
General Bouille! Punishing me would suffice! Its a mistake to execute those 12 men!
No, they will serve as a warning to the others. Any further breach of military discipline will brew a crisis for the entire French military!
And he was about to leave the room, when Oscar yelled behind him:
And one more thing, charging into the assembly hall with armed force will leave an unforgivable blemish on French history!
I think the greater blemish is the sit-in by the National Assembly! The royal guards will remove the rebels.
Royal guards?? The words echoed in Oscars mind as she watched General leave. She couldnt stay here any longer. She firmly held the rifle pointed at her.
Hey, what are you doing?!
Sorry, but you have to let me go! she said and suddenly jumped towards the door. But it was too crowded inside, one of the soldiers caught her from the waist and they both fell down to the ground! Oscar cried at her last chance:
Andr!
Andr was waiting right outside the door ever since she was called inside. When he heard Oscars cry, he opened the door without hesitation:
Oscar! When he saw the critical scene inside, he immediately picked up one of the rifles on the ground, and hit the man holding Oscar in the face! Then, as he pointed the rifle towards rest of the men, Oscar managed to get out of the room. In one minute, they were both outside, riding on their horses as fast as possible.
Oscar shouted:
Hurry Andr! The royal guards are charging into the assembly hall! We have to stop them!
At the same time, the Royal Guards had already reached the assembly hall. Gerodre started to address at the delegates gathered in the main gate:
I am Royal Guards Regiment Commander Colonel Gerodre! Attention, delegates of the National Assembly in the hall:
If you remain occupying the hall, you will be considered as traitors who disobeyed the Kings order! The Royal Guards Regiment will have no choice but to resort to the use of force!
Nobody moved. Then, Gerodre yelled at his men:
Prepare for assault!
The soldiers climbed down their horses, with rifles at hand. They had just started to walk towards the delegates, when two horses ran like wind in the space between the two groups:
Make way! Make way!
They passed all the way down and returned back to where Gerodre was standing. He was out of breath when he saw the rider of the white horse: Oscar!
Commander!
Oscar gazed into his eyes firmly:
Gerodre, do you have the courage to take my sword?! All you Royal Guards, do you have the courage to put a bullet through my heart?!
Then, fire! If you point your arms at the unarmed delegates of the third estate, youll have to step over my corpse first!
Everybody was in great shock! Gerodre clenched his teeth: What should he do?? At one side, stood the woman he loved, with all his heart On the other side, there was the possibility that he would become a traitor if he allowed this. He stared at the eyes of Oscar: they were burning like the fires of Hephaistos! Gerodre felt his heart tremble was there even a slightest possibility that he would hurt the woman he loved this much?! He put his sword back into its sheath.
Mademoiselle, please sheathe your sword How can we fire at you, our former Commander? How can we become such cowards as to point guns at unarmed people in front of you? Well wait until the day they take up arms
And he added slowly:
This is for you even if I shall become a traitor
Oscar slightly bent her head down Gerodre What he had done right now was a great piece of courage. She thought, maybe if Andr wasnt in her life, he would be the guy she could have loved! But life wasnt fair for all of us
Gerodre commanded his men to retreat, and they left without saying any other word. He quietly raised his hand to wave goodbye, as he was about to disappear from the sight. Inside her heart, Oscar wished him happiness in the rest of his life
That night at the mansion was a turbulent one. Count Jarjayes had already learnt the news, feeling humiliated by his own daughter. He had to take care of the rebel with his own hands! He sent Nanny down to bring Oscar to him.
Oscar wasnt surprised at all when she saw him standing with his sword at his hand, as she entered his room. She had already been expecting a punishment. She didnt think it would come so quick, though
General pointed at the chair opposite of him:
Sit here, Oscar!
Oscar obeyed at his words without saying anything. General went on:
Are you ready Oscar?
Ready for what?
General lost his temper immediately:
Take off your insignia of rank and the medal the King gave you!
Oscar was still calm:
Let me ask you again, ready for what?
Are you still defiant in front of your father?!
He unsheathed his sword, spoke sternly: If you have any last words, say them! Though a traitor, you are still my daughter
Oscar looked at him coldly:
Twelve of my men are imprisoned in Abbey, waiting to be executed. If slaying me would save those 12 men, then Id gladly give my life to you. But I know, thats not how things go So, I cannot die here now!
Give up Oscar! Loyalty to the King, no matter what happens, is the tradition of Jarjayes family. Having a traitor in the family is the end! He passed behind the chair, slowly raised his sword, added:
Dont worry After I send you to God, Ill follow right behind!
Oscar, sitting firmly with a great courage until that time, could no longer endure: Her body shook in terror, tears began to drop down to her cheeks:
I cannot take your punishment even more so!
It was also so hard for her father to keep his courage. He couldnt prevent his eyes from getting wet:
You are kind but this is it!
He knew that if he didnt do this right now, he would never be able to do it again! So, he gathered all his strength and raised his sword high in the air It was at that moment Andr entered the room like a storm:
Please dont!"
He grabbed the raised arm with all his strength! At the same time, because of the storm outside, the candles of the chandelier in the room went off all. The two men began to fight inside the dark room, for the life of the woman they both loved the most in the world.
The General wasnt strong enough to resist the young man holding his arm:
Let me go, Andr! he yelled in anguish.
Andr was using all his power to save the life of his most beloved one:
I wont let you go if you are going to slay Lady Oscar! he cried, No, Ill never let you go!
Then, he slowly released the old man.
General shouted angrily:
Now get out of my way!
But what? Andr was pointing a gun towards him now!
If you persist, Im going to shoot you he said calmly, then take Oscar and run away!
Generals eyes were wide-opened:
What?? Run away with Oscar?! Is that how you feel?
Yes replied Andr. He wasnt afraid of anything now There was nothing else to worry about. At this critical moment of their lives, everything was so unimportant to him, he didnt care about the fact that this man he was about to shoot was his master! In fact, Andr was the only one in the room who was this calm at that moment: General was in a great shock to learn that his servant was in love with his daughter, so much that he was ready to kill himself to save her!
Oscars shock wasnt small either: Although she knew Andrs feelings for her, she still couldnt estimate how deep they really were!
General Jarjayes didnt know what to say; he was in the middle of feeling a great mercy versus a great anger towards his servant:
Stupid! he finally managed to say, Do you think you can overcome the difference of class?
Let me ask you! Andr yelled, What is a class? What is a commoner? All men are equal!
Generals face stiffened even more:
You need a permit from the King to marry a noble! he shouted.
I know that! But even if its the King, do you need a permit from a stranger to love someone?!
Oscar was struck by Andrs words: The ideas of a new era, the ideas she was stunned to hear from a child, the ideas she had herself been considering for a while in that small instance, she had finally seen the whole picture: All men are equal! There shouldnt be any classes in the society, any walls seperating two lovers; there cant be! The enlightenment the world had been going through for a few centuries was at last able to produce a world which should be ready to accept this very humanitarian principle! All men are equal Now, it was the time to defend this splendid idea of humanity; like the way Andr did so bravely a few seconds ago.
But Oscars father wasnt so open-minded: He slapped Andr hard on the face! How could he dare?!! Oscar was frozen numb. She felt as if her own cheek hurt
General stood still, with a fierce look in his eyes:
I wont forgive either of you!
Andr saw, there was no escape He then accepted his fate. However, there was something he couldnt admit:
Then, slay me first, he said firmly, Even if its for a moment, Id have to see my loves death if Im the second That would be too painful for me
Andr酔 uttered Oscar, her heart moved. Her mind couldnt accept a love of this size She was now realizing how unfair she had been towards Andr. This guy was willing to give his life for her! Yet, she had been hiding her emotions from him like a sin, just because of her responsibilities! But at this critical moment of her life, at this moment when their lives were both about to come to end, all those responsibilities seemed so ridiculous to her! If only she could reverse the time
The lightnings stroke outside, announcing the tragedy which was about to take place. General slowly raised his hand, murmuring: Alright, Ill make your wish come true, then! His hand holding the sword was shaking, it was also not easy for him Yet, he could never forgive the traitors, especially those from inside of his house!
Just at that right moment, a voice came from the main gates, like the sound of the messiah from the heaven:
Open the gate! Count Jarjayes, open the gate! I have an urgent message coming from Versailles!
In one minute, the messenger coming from Versailles was reading the message which would save three lives that night
~~~~~~~~~~@~~~~~~~~~
The storm had ended. The beautiful summer night breeze had already filled the air. Oscar opened the windows of her room, stared at the full moon and the stars above her window, shining among the last pieces of the rain clouds that were about to dissolve Looking at the far bright worlds on the other side of the universe, she tried to overcome the shock of what she had lived half an hour ago
It was such a clearoff! If it werent for that messenger, she and Andr could be dead by now! She shivered through the idea of death No, she didnt want to die! Not now! She had so much to do. But, at the very first
Suddenly she closed the window and walked towards the door with decided steps: She knew what to do: There was going to be no more delays. Not any more!
Andr was in the stacks, trying to recover from the big fear he had gone through. No, it wasnt the fear of death; he would prefer dying with the woman he loved, to living without her! But if he hadnt entered that room at the right time she could have died! He was still in the shock of coming to the edge of losing his precious He couldnt imagine how life would be without her no, he certainly couldnt endure that and kill himself!
The door of the stacks was blown open. Andr released himself from the deep thoughts and looked at the person who entered: Oscar!
Andr, I want you to go on riding with me! she ordered harshly.
Andr nodded: Yes, maam! But he couldnt help feeling a slight sorrow in his heart She was still treating him like her servant; or, one of her men
Oscar came in, stood by him. Her voice was a lot softer when she started to speak again:
Andr I want you to ride with me like we used to do, when we were children would you do it for me?
Andrs heart was filled with joy instantaneously. Ah, his beloved treasure, she was never one of the other nobles! She had always treated him as her equal, as if they really lived in a fair world! Andr knew, Oscar was ready to accept with all her heart the ideas he had uttered towards the face of the general half an hour ago. Thats why you are so special Oscar you are never like other nobles who would only think of themselves you are so special, even if I put my love aside and look at you that way
In a moment, they were on the horses, galloping. Andr was following besides Oscar, but he couldnt make a meaning out of it; where were they going all of a sudden, at this time of the night? Was Oscar considering to go to some other place where they would be safer? Or did she think to complete some work at the barracks? Suddenly, he realized that the way they were riding was not leading anywhere.. except the riverside. He was even more curious now; what was Oscar planning to do?
Oscar didnt say a word until they reached at the edge of the river. Then she climbed down her horse, tied it to a tree nearby. Stunned, Andr did the same, too. Then, Oscar sat down, on the grasses which were still wet because of the storm that struck an hour ago. She slowly spoke when Andr squated besides her:
Isnt this place the greatest river in the world, Andr? We have so many memories here
Still puzzled, Andr nodded. Then, he added with a smirk on his face:
Yes, like the day when we were nearly getting drowned! You were five, I was six, i guess
Oscar couldnt help but laugh:
Yes indeed! And do you remember the fight we had here? On the day when my father had forced you to convince me to wear the military uniform?
Of course I do, smiled Andr, Gosh, you had punched me so hard when you had accused me of lying to you!
Well, you deserved it! Oscar smiled back. I was really angry at you then But but as the years passed, I was grateful to you and my father for that enforcement
Andr was suprised: Oscar
Yes, affirmed Oscar, Wearing that uniform has given me so much freedom: A freedom a woman could never achieve otherwise You know, if I werent the commander of Royal Guards or something, most probably I was going to be forced to marry years years ago!
Oh Andr suddenly felt a pain inside him, with the idea of Oscar marrying some other man, and then he himself felt gratefulness for the fate Oscars father had drawn for her: Thank God!...Yet
But you have sacrificed so much, he said, You could never feel the tastes of womanhood You had to behave like a lilac while you are a beautiful rose
Oscar turned her head to see Andrs face as he said these words; the same words as in that night But now, Oscar was fully aware of what Andr meant by them, there was no humiliation for her feminity, on the contrary, Andr was truly sorry for her for not having tasted the real happiness of being a woman
She smiled affectionately, then stretched her arm to grab Andrs hand. Andr was too much touched by this gesture, which was clearly revealing that she understood him completely. The eyes of both of them were misty now.
Then, Oscar spoke with a slow voice:
Yes, I did sacrifice too much I even thought I lost the love of my life because of it But.. but in fact, I have found the love of my life thanks to it!
Andrs hand began to shake within Oscars palm. He had suddenly realized what Oscar was trying to say.
Oscars eyes were filled with tears in a moment; she had remembered the events of today:
Andr Im so weak so powerless I couldnt save my men today! I escaped the sword of Dad thanks to you!
She paused desperately to see his reaction. He was watching her silently, with a tender, compassionate expression on his face. She continued:
And I used to love Fersen Knowing that you love me; I still loved Fersen! Could you still possibly love a woman like this?!
Her beautiful lips were trembling with the hardness of saying these words. But Andr was calm as ever. He spoke with a soft, yet determined voice:
For as long as I live I will always love you, and everything about you, Oscar
Oscar couldnt stand any more. She threw herself into the arms of the man she loved! She let go her tears and sobbed, with her face buried in the broad torso of this beautiful man:
Andr Ah, Andr! I love you, too with all my heart!
Andr tightly embraced her, then held her hand and looked into her eyes:
I know I have known it for years; no, even before I was born!
Then, their lips united It was a long and passionate kiss; as if they were waiting for this moment for all their lives Oscar no longer cared about her responsibilities, nor the fact that she was the Commander of this man. She had learnt the shortness of life so painfully today! Yes, she still had some business to do; but it could wait until tomorrow. This night, here at this place where they had some of their most intimate memories from childhood, she wanted to be his wife at last Slowly, she lied down on the grass, pulled him over herself. She had the waterproof raincoat beneath her; but even if she hadnt, she wouldnt have felt the wetness of grasses with the passion flowing in her veins!
Andr obeyed her will, leaning over her. But as she whispered:
Andr Grandier I want to be your wife tonight, he couldnt believe in his ears.
Oscar Are you sure about this?
The woman beneath him was no longer that icy queen. Her eyes were full of love and passion:
More than I have ever been
Andr had nothing to do, except kissing the woman of his dreams once again! Then he slowly directed his kisses towards her neck, and then lower, to the fine line between her breasts.
Oscar was thrilled with the feeling of burning kisses at the parts of her body which were never touched before! She caressed the gushing hair of the man instinctively, encouraging him to continue.
Andr began to undo the buttons of her shirt then, while he continued to kiss her neck and shoulders. When he managed to uncover the front of her shirt, he lowered his head to the beautiful marble-white breasts that were revealed. When he took one of the nipples into his mouth, the heart paces of both of them were hastened!
Oscar moaned with desire; she could have never imagined making love would be so delightful; she had now begun to sense what she had missed so far Yet, she would still be willing to wait until this moment, instead of sharing this beautiful pleasure with someone else other than Andr! He was really so caring against her he had been touching her with a great love and being afraid of hurting her even at his wildest time of passion! She slowly whispered: My Andr酔 into his ear.
This was more than Andr could ever dream of! He hugged the porcelaine princess between his arms once again, oh, how much he loved this woman! If there was ever something called bliss, this had to be it! He began to undress his love and himself, without any hurry, enjoying every single minute of the time passing
Oscar was like floating in a sea; she was dreaming of being embraced with warm waves Suddenly, the waves began to get rough; she was hurt for one moment Im sorry, my love whispered the sea, inside the eyes of Andr. Fortunately, the pain didnt last long, she was again hugged by affectionate waves; which were getting faster and faster like a storm. But even this turbulence was so good, so full of life! The waves got rougher and harsher, filling Oscar with some suffering but a great joy at the same time. She was raised to the top of a wave, up to the sky, and suddenly, she felt a big wave coming over her, throwing her from the utmost point she was at. Then, the sea was like a millpond, still and silent: This first love experience of hers had come to an end!
She slowly opened her eyes she had closed when she had sensed the outburst inside her.
Andr, who was out of breath, was lying next to her, his head leaned to her shoulder. He looked at her, when he felt her eyes on him. He smiled; Oscar thought she had never seen him smiling so happily before
My Oscar  he whispered, I love you
Oscar couldnt say anything. Nothing was worth saying She fondled to the beautiful face of Andr. She wiped off the sweat drops from his temples with the tip of her neat fingers, then Andr caught these fingers and kissed with love.
You are my wife now he said, proud, yet unable to believe.
Yes, she said smiling, Im your wife, at the witness of moon, stars and this beautiful river Then, she was filled with a fear, she couldnt help frowning: Andr! I want you to promise me: You will never, ever leave me alone!
Andr was suprised and happy at the same time. Hugging his beloved one:
Of course not, Oscar! he cried, How could I?! As long as I live, Ill always be beside you
Andr酔 Oscar kissed him with all her heart. Ah, how much she loved this man! He was the only one she could always rely on, as she already did, throughout her life
Suddenly, a cough crisis came: Oscar had to sit up, coughing, for a long time which seemed like an hour to stunned Andr: He had never seen her coughing so badly before!
Oscar! Are you okay, Oscar? Oscar, my love, oh my baby!
As she continued to suffer, he was feeling as if his own lungs were aching. When Oscar stopped coughing, she looked at him sadly, as if she was trying to apologize, although nothing was her fault at all
Andr was nearly mad at the thought of his beloved ones suffering! He quickly covered her with his own coat, then urged her to return back to the mansion.
Oscar resisted:
Im fine, Andr That was only a short crisis I must have caught a cold Dont worry, Ill be fine
No, this cool weather is no good for you! We are returning back! I dont want your cold to get worse! Andr held her in his arms and lifted, turning a deaf ear to her protests. He could never let anything happen to her! As he was carrying her, he was amazed at how light she was How could a woman so fragile manage to be so determined, so cast-iron will? He admired her once again, yet he was worried about her health:
Oscar, my love You havent been this weak before Tell me, have you been losing weight recently?
Oscar couldnt prevent a small laughter coming out of her mouth:
Have you ever carried me like this before, Andr? How could you judge that?
Not exactly, but many times, I have carried you back home from the bars you had got drunk at! he continued with the same mischievous tone of her. But his eyes were filled with the cloud of concern once again, he immediately got serious:
Oscar, seriously: I feel like you are not so well nowadays Please, promise me, you will visit Dr. Laonne tomorrow!
I cant whispered Oscar slowly I have to save my men, Andr Please understand me
Andr bent his head Then, he began to speak again:
Then at least when this business is over, you will go to see him! You should promise me about it, Oscar!
Andrs beautiful emerald eyes were silently begging. Oscar felt she could never resist these eyes She slowly nodded. Andr hugged her once more, then helped her get on her horse, and he untied the horses.
After they returned back home, he insisted her to take a seat in front of the burning flames of the fireplace, while he prepared hot chocolate for her. Then, they sat there for a long time, looking at the flames, drinking hot chocolate, and talking about their chilhood memories
Oscar had not laughed so much for a long time... She had not felt she was alive so strongly for a long, long time Tonight was a magical night. She had finally become the wife of the man she loved, and enjoyed every minute of the time passing She had a hard job to achieve tomorrow, that was right But she had the enough courage for it now. Knowing that she would have this great man standing by her all her life, she was feeling she could indeed achieve anything
